Crush Boredom with a Hobby

What Qualifies as a Hobby

Sometimes when I ask someone if they have a hobby they tell me they watch television. Sitting in front of the telly burns time, but it’s not a hobby. It may even help with boredom, but I have better suggestions.

1. Sports and physical activities

2. Creative projects

3. Mental activities

4. Musical pursuits

5. Collecting items of interest

Why Bother?

Hobbies are fun and give you something to look forward to doing. All work and no play is the root of boredom. Who wants to be dull and boring? Not me. We need variety in our lives. And what better way to connect with like-minded people at social events? There’s nothing worse than people droning on about their jobs while at a party. If all you have to talk about is work, you need a hobby.

Examples of Hobbies

Physical activities: jogging, walking, kickboxing, pilates, martial arts, rock climbing, hiking, swimming, gardening and yoga are just a few. I can’t do most of these things. Thank goodness I have other choices.

Creative projects: making jewelry, flower pressing, painting, drawing, assembling model cars, knitting, writing, photography, and decorating provides enjoyment.

Mental activities: Piecing puzzles together, reading, and word games stimulate the mind. Writing stories, songs, or poetry also qualifies as a creative project while exercising the brain.

Musical pursuits: Learning how to play the piano, guitar, harp or any other instrument strengthens the connection between the left and right side of the brain. Playing a musical instrument allows the brain a workout by recruiting the regions that process vision, sound, movement, and memory. Researchers have written articles on this subject.

Collecting items of interest: It only takes 3 items to start a collection. I have vintage toys, books, crystals, and music boxes. Some people fill scrapbooks with letters, cards and photos. A scrapbook collection ticks off the creative project category as well.

Get Cracking

The next time you’re bored, consider starting a new hobby or engaging with an old one. If you don’t know where to begin, ask your friends what they do in their spare time. Or take a look on Pinterest for craft hobbies. If you know what you want to do but don’t know how to start, review YouTube videos. It’s the best site ever for inspiration.
